With over five million allied health providers in the United States across 80 professions, they make up 60% of the healthcare workforce. This number is projected to grow significantly as the demand for skilled professionals increases, particularly in roles requiring bachelor’s or graduate degrees.

Allied health providers often work collaboratively with physicians, nurses, and pharmacists, contributing to patient assessments, progress evaluations, and care coordination. Others specialize independently in areas like nutrition, exercise, and speech therapy.

The field of allied health is divided into two main categories: technicians (assistants) and therapists/technologists. Technicians are trained in specific procedures through programs lasting less than two years and work under the supervision of therapists or technologists. Examples include physical therapy assistants and radiological technicians. Therapists and technologists, on the other hand, undergo more extensive education, learning not only procedural skills but also patient evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment planning. They are equipped to assess treatment effectiveness and adjust plans as needed, ensuring patients receive optimal care tailored to their progress and needs.
